Victoria Park and Herston Health Precinct are two game changers to our local area.
Victoria Park is being transformed to a major public park under the Victoria Park Vision project at a cost of $83m over four years and will be Brisbane’s biggest new park in 50 years.
Victoria Park initially spanned an area of 130 hectares but now covers an area of 27 hectares due to the suburbs of Herston, Spring Hill and Bowen Hills as these areas grew to accommodate housing development, schools, hospitals, golf courses and show grounds were permitted to be built on the park land.
We are benefitting from the foresight of our forefathers in the mid 1800’s who worked hard to provide recreational lands for the people of Brisbane with parks seen as “lungs of the city” and “breathing space”. The initial designation was a “public park for recreation, convenience, health and amusement of the inhabitants of the City of Brisbane. Under the Vision project, it’s full potential will soon be realised and enjoyed.
Like Centennial Park in Sydney, the transformation of Victoria Park will be a huge draw card to the surrounding suburbs such as Herston, Paddington, Red Hill, Kelvin Grove, Spring Hill and Petrie Terrace.
The Herston Health Precinct is now seeing the redevelopment of a five hectare site called Herston Quarter. The $1.1 billion transformation of Herston Quarter will deliver a mixed-use community which will cater for health, residential, commercial and retail development.
This exciting project will complement the world-class health, education and research facilities within the Herston Health Precinct, including the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. Herston Quarter will be integrated with the broader Herston Health Precinct and will create a thriving community.
For many years, Herston in particular has lagged behind other suburbs but with the Victoria Park Vision project and the Herston Health Precinct underway, it is being increasingly sought after. Other adjoining suburbs like Paddington, Red Hill, Kelvin Grove, Spring Hill and Petrie Terrace are set to benefit especially from the new Victoria Park.
