Hamilton’s Cottage is a rare brick nineteenth-century cottage that has survived in one of Brisbane’s earliest suburbs, Spring Hill.
The cottage is a rare example of a period Victorian era 1860 – 1890 style Queenslander. It was built circa 1876 for George Hamilton, a grocer. The cottage stands as a testament to the past, nestled in the heart of colonial Brisbane right next to Brisbane Central State School.
It is among other historical homes located on the tree lined stretch of Rogers and Victoria Street, in a precinct considered to be one of Spring Hill’s most desirable places to live in and once voted as Brisbane’s prettiest streets.

. Ownership timeline:
- John Christian Huessler purchased the land in 1858 and subdivided it into smaller allotments
- Charles George Skinner acquired a portion of the land in 1862 and possibly used the money from mortgaging it to construct the residence at 22 Rogers Street
- George Hamilton, a grocer purchased the land in 1872, had the cottage built circa 1876 and resided there till his death in 1899
- The Hamilton family maintained their connection to the property until 1937 when Catherine King Hamilton passed away.
