A home, whether it be an apartment, townhouse or house is a big deal.
For many, it is not just a roof over their heads.
It is where they and their family live.
Where they play and increasingly work in.
Raise their children who go to a local school.
Make friends and become a part of the community.
That is why it is called putting down “roots”.
For some a home is a sign of their status.
Their biggest financial investment.
For others it is their retreat, their oasis, their place.
As real estate agents, we can sometimes forget this.
We can see it as just as another home, another property.
Another sale, because that’s what we do.
We often forget just how big a deal it is for someone to sell their home.
A big deal.
A really big deal.
For property owners who are thinking of selling one day, there are many questions and fears that go through their minds:
What if we put the house on the market and don’t get the price we want?
What if we sell and the market keeps going up and up?
Fear of Loss.
What if we sell and we can’t find a property that we like to buy?
Fear of Uncertainty?
What if we sell and the property we like costs a lot more than we can afford?
What if we sell and can’t get back into the market?
Which real estate agent and agency do we get to sell our home?
What if we put the house on the market, spend money on staging and marketing and it doesn’t sell?
For buyers, there are an equal number of concerns:
How can we afford the property we like?
What if interest rates go up in the future?
What if we pay too much because the market is so hot?
What if the property market goes backwards?
What if we buy and then lose my job afterwards?
What if we buy and then one of us gets a job transfer?
What if we buy the house and then later find things wrong with it?
What if we don’t like the neighbours?
These fears and concerns are all part of parcel of buying or selling a property.
Ups and downs.
An emotional roller-coaster.
The joy and fears.
The angst.
The uncertainty.
All these can make people do nothing or maintain the status quo.
Sometimes, unexpected things happen and they have to act.
Or the benefits of gain are so great, they overcome their fears and act.
Like they fall in love with a home and just have to have it.
Whenever I get a call from a property owner wanting to sell, I know that they have already been on a personal journey themselves in arriving at this decision.
It’s a big deal.
A lot is at stake.
Wrapped up in their dreams and aspirations are fears and anxieties.
